Lawn & Garden

Gardening is considered our nation's most popular pastime, yielding fresh fruits and vegetables for the dinner table, a cleaner environment and aesthetically pleasing landscapes. North Carolina Cooperative Extension helps gardeners learn more about new plants, native plants and environmental stewardship. Extension-trained Master Gardener volunteers are instrumental in these efforts, sharing their knowledge of plant selection, cultural practices and pest management with fellow gardeners, school students and others.

The goal of the home horticulture program in Macon County is to provide timely and factual information that enable citizens to make informed decisions regarding horticultural practices, goods and services. Information is provided to the public through group programs, individual consultations, extension publications, the internet, a monthly newsletter, and a weekly radio program.

SOIL SAMPLE RESULTS

The Master Gardener program is a key component of horticulture program in Macon County and classes are conducted each year mid January and mid May. The current emphasis of the Master Gardener Volunteers is the development of the demonstration gardens at the Macon County Environmental Center.
