North Carolina 4-H State Presentations were held on the campus of North Carolina State University on July 20, 2019. State Presentations serve as the kickoff event for N.C. 4-H Congress, which was held July 20-23 in Raleigh, NC.

Kacey F. presented in the 14-18-year-old Small and Companion Animal Category with her presentation, “The Making of a Bunny’s Life.” Catherine P. presented “Parakeets” in 8-10-year-old Small and Companion Animal Category. Alanna P. presented “Genetically Modified Organisms” in the 14-18-year-old Agricultural Science Category, where she was awarded the Gold medal.

Five Carteret County youth attended N.C. 4-H Congress 2019; Alanna P., Lauren D., Elizabeth S., Gracie H. and Kacey F. These delegates attended workshops including sessions like “Beat the Clock to Unlock the Great Escape,” “Intro to American Sign Language and the Deaf Culture,” and “Youth Preparedness 101.” They were also able to hear speeches from each of the State Officers as well as motivational speaker, Mr. Fred Grooms. On Monday, county delegates were given time to explore Raleigh. Our youth went on a mural hunt in downtown, looking for murals that are part of the Raleigh Mural Project. They also visited the sunflower field at Dorothea Dix and ended their time visiting NC State University’s campus and painting in the Free Expression Tunnel way. In addition, delegates took part in a tour of James B. Hunt, Jr. Library. Hunt Library serves as the intellectual and social nexus for the rapidly growing population on NC State University’s Centennial Campus. The Hunt building also houses the Institute for Emerging Issues, which former North Carolina Governor James B. Hunt Jr. was instrumental in establishing. More information about Hunt Library.

On Monday evening, delegates attended the Clover Gala to close N.C. 4-H Congress 2019. The gala was highlighted by the N.C. 4-H Talent Showcase, where one our youth, Gracie H. performed, “It’s a Little Personal.” Gracie was chosen, along with 13 others from across the State, to share her talent at the event. After the Clover Gala, youth took part in the Candlelight Clover Ceremony to induct new 2019-2020 State 4-H Officers.

N.C. 4-H Congress culminated with a Hands to Service project on Tuesday were 4-H’ers from across the State packaged over 80,000 meals to be distributed to area food banks.

Each 4-H’er was able to hear from great speakers, learn new skills in workshops, visit many new places, and participate in community service, all while having a great time and meeting new friends from across the state.
