The Extension Master Gardener℠ Program of Randolph County is accepting applications for its 2024 Class. Continue reading below for some of the most frequently asked questions about the program. To learn more about the dates and times of the class please download a copy of the 2024 Class Syllabus.
For some background, nearly every county in the US has some form of a Master Gardener Program. The purpose of Master Gardeners is to provide education and assistance to the general public on a wide range of horticultural topics, but there is ample opportunity for Master Gardeners to gain knowledge on topics that interest them and develop a great network of like-minded friends. The social aspect of any Master Gardener Program is just as strong as its volunteerism.
So, what does a Master Gardener do exactly?
Well, the Master Gardener Program meets monthly and usually has a guest speaker or activity planned where MGVs learn new things. During these meetings, MGVs also discuss volunteer projects and plan new ones. Some volunteer projects the Randolph Master Gardeners have participated in the past include (1) Rain Garden Design and Install at Trinity Farmers Market, (2) School Programs, and (3) the recurring maintenance of the Green Roof Garden at the I-74 Southbound Rest Area.

I’m interested. How do I become a Randolph County Master Gardener Volunteer?
We’re glad you’re interested! You will surely make a great addition to our program. To join, you’ll need to fill out and submit a 2024 Extension Master Gardener Application (click to download). You can either mail this application to the Extension Office OR come by our office and pick up a copy. Once we receive your filled-out application back we will notify you upon acceptance and you will have 2-weeks to send in program fees which include your dues, textbook, and training supplies. You will also need to be able to commit to attending the training sessions which are held weekly.

What opportunities does the Master Gardener Program provide for me?

As mentioned before, there are ample opportunities in the Master Gardener Program to further your knowledge as an individual. We take field trips periodically to gardens, NCSU research facilities, and other locations that membership suggests. During monthly meetings, we learn new things through guest speakers and activities. Randolph County Extension is also getting a new “Ag Center” (formally called F3EC) where there will be ample opportunities to volunteer and create starting in 2025. This state-of-the-art facility includes a teaching greenhouse, demonstration gardens, demonstration orchards, and demonstration landscaping.

Do I have to pay to be a Master Gardener?

Yes, but it is only a one-time fee. Once you’ve paid your initial fees which include your membership fee, textbook, and training supplies you will never have to pay to become a Master Gardener again, providing your certification never lapses.
I hope this information is helpful in your decision to become a Master Gardener! If you have any questions whatsoever feel free to email me at cjcraddo@ncsu.edu or call me at 336.318.6003.
