Interest Grows in Producing Christmas Trees

Christy Bredenkamp, N.C. Cooperative Extension, Macon County Center Director recently hosted a Christmas Tree Production 101 Workshop on December 8th at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Macon County Center.  Participants traveled from Clay, Jackson, Haywood, Transylvania and Macon Counties to hear Jeff Owen, NC State Christmas Tree Specialist share the basics of: site selection and preparation, planting scenarios, alternate tree species, an introduction to the pests, budget costs, shearing, marketing, annual practices and more. Many questions were asked on site selection, Christmas tree shape and grades, availability of transplants, along with much discussion on wholesale versus retail and choose and cut operations.
