Macon County Beekeepers LogoInterested in beekeeping or want to learn more about bees?

Local beekeepers, in cooperation with the Macon County Beekeepers Association, are conducting a class for beginning beekeepers.

This class is two days in the classroom and one day at a local bee yard.

Topics to be Covered:

  • Hive Components
  • Types of Bees
  • Locating and setting up your bee yard
  • Swarming and how to manage it
  • Working with your bees
  • Annual management – calendar year
  • Biology of individual bees (what makes a queen a queen?)
  • Products of the hives and why bees make them
  • Installing bees: nuc, package or swarm

Cost is $100.00 per person which includes the book “Beekeeping for Dummies” and dues to the Macon County Beekeepers Association for a year.

Registration fee is $50.00 (non-refundable), which guarantees you a spot. Space is limited to 50 students. Checks can be made out to the Macon County Bee Club for either the $50.00 deposit or the full $100.00. Please send them to Debbie at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Macon County Center, 193 Thomas Heights Rd., Franklin, NC 28734, attention: Bee School. Include your name, email and phone number with the payment.

Dates for 2025 class are February 22nd and March 1st.

  • Apiary visit date is March 15 (March 22nd if rainout)
  • Registration is at 8:00 a.m., class runs 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. with lunch break
