June is National Dairy Month. Our dairy farmers work 365 days a year to bring us one of nature’s most nutritious foods. Dairy foods pack a punch when it comes to essential nutrients such as carbohydrates and fat for energy, protein for building muscles, calcium, and vitamin D for strong bones. Milk also provides electrolytes and fluid making it a great recovery and post-workout drink. Fermented dairy foods such as Kefir, cottage cheese, and yogurt provide healthy gut bacteria to help boost immunity. According to the USDA My Plate recommendations, adults should consume 3 servings of dairy products per day. Children should consume around 2 or 2 ½ servings per day, depending on their age. An example of a typical serving of dairy is: 1 cup of milk. Try this breakfast smoothie to start your day with a nutritious boost of dairy nutrition.
